Raymondo
“And so it is that Raymondo and Sparky, each of them with one half of the cape over their shoulders, sit in the café and eat good things – suety things, gravy-clad things, meaty things, green things, cheesy things, chocolatey things and fruity things – until Sparky, whose stomach is only used to lettucey pap, feels proper nauseated.”
Raymondo was my first show back from a long hiatus from theatre. First scratched at Pulse Festival Suitcase Prize in 2013 it then premiered at Pulse 2014 before going to Edinburgh with East to Edinburgh, returning in 2015 for the British Council Showcase, and touring the UK. In Spring 2019 it toured the US with the Cartographers, playing intimate spaces, libraries, living rooms and bars across the States.
Raymondo and Sparky have been locked in the cellar underneath their house for six years. An accident involving a pigeon enables their escape. But do they have the requisite skills to survive a haphazard, cruel world? A story of brotherhood, loss, incarceration, escape, survival, desire, art and resilience. A story about the shittiness of others, the kindness of others, and Love. Simply told by a woman with a microphone and an atmospheric live score of guitars, loops and keyboard, Raymondo is a raw, dark, funny and tender lyrical narrative that will sear through your defences straight to your heart.Featuring music by Marcus Hamblett. Guitars played in various iterations by Marcus Hamblett, Danny Green, and Tom Adams.Dir: Justin Audibert. Lighting:Andy Purves.
