Just before Christmas, I got an email from the Bush Theatre, asking me to come in and chat to Ruthie Osterman about a project she was creating/curating.It’s called Babylon Beyond Borders and is the second week of the Babylon Festival the Bush is hosting, which is a celebration of diaspora, immigration, people of colour and an interrogation of the Babel myth. BBB is a phenomenally ambitious collaboration between four theatres in four cities in four continents each with an iconic tower and will be live streamed from all locations.Ruthie asked me if I wanted in as dramaturg of the whole thing and writer of the London scenes, and I said hellyes. We’ve been embracing the vagaries of skype rehearsals, buffering, time differences, aesthetic differences, language barriers, working with a community chorus. It feels like a show in which process and product are inextricably linked and I love them kinds of shows. You can see the fruits of our labours at the Bush Theatre next week from Tuesday-Saturday.12-16 Feb. It’s gonna be really special.
